How To Set Up A Windows 2000 Dial-up Setup

First, you will need to click on the "Start" button in the lower left hand corner of your screen. Select "Settings" from the menu, and finally choose "Network and Dial-up Connections".
 

Double-Click on the "Make New Connection" icon.

 

Click "Next" to start the setup

 

Select "Dial-up to private network" and click "Next".
Enter the local dial-up number for your city or town. To view a list of available numbers, please visit our Local Numbers page. When finished, click the "Next" button

 

Select "For All Users" here for everyone that uses the computer to have dial-up access. If you want to restrict internet access from others, it may be a good idea to select "Only for myself" and click the "Next" button.

 

Connection Availability.
Enter a name to group your internet settings under. This should be something like "Internet" or "FamilySmart". Also, make sure the checkbox at the bottom is marked to add a shortcut to your desktop screen. Once this is completed, click "Next".
In the "Network and Dial-up Connections" window, right-click on your new FamilySmart icon. This should cause a small context menu to appear. Click on the Properties option to proceed to the next step.

 

Once the Properties window opens, select the "Networking" tab. And then select the "Settings" button.
In the "PPP Settings" window, make sure that "Enable Software Compression " is the only item with a checkmark in it's box. Once you have verified this, click the "OK" button.

 

Make sure that only "Internet Protocol (TCP/IP)" and "Client for Microsoft Networks" have checkmarks next to them. Next, highlight the "Internet Protocol (TCP/IP)" item and click on the "Properties" button.
 

Since FamilySmart and ACTLink dynamically assigns IP address's when you dial up, "Obtain an IP address automatically" should be selected in the top section. Below, you will need to specify id the DNS section "Obtain an IP address automatically" as well. Once those settings have been entered, click "OK" to exit the settings. Your Dial-Up Networking is now configured to connect to FamilySmart.

 

NOTE:
Make absolutely sure that File and Printer Sharing is UNCHECKED, as it can cause some security issues to arise by allowing other people on the internet access to your files in your computer.
